OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Another quick first goal
and an insurance goal by sophomore Kyle Baker
(Mitchellville/Bowie) on a penalty kick proved to be
enough as the Stevenson men's soccer team won its first CAC game of
the season, 2-1 over St. Mary's (Md.) Saturday at Caves Athletics
Complex.
The win was the sixth in the last seven games at home for the
Mustangs (5-4, 1-1 CAC) who also won their fourth conference game
in the last five.
For the fourth consecutive contest, Stevenson scored the game's
first goal less than 10 minutes in as freshman Ansger Otto
(Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) scored his team-leading
fifth of the season off an assist from sophomore Sam Byrant
(Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township).
The Mustangs have scored the game's first goal six times this
season, five of which have come in the first 10 minutes. The team
is 5-1 in those games.
Otto's goal would be the only one of the half despite Stevenson
holding an 11-3 advantage in shots and a 6-1 margin in corners.
After a handball on St. Mary's (3-6, 1-3 CAC) in the box in the
56th minute, Baker would add some insurance to the Mustangs' lead
with his third goal of the season and the team's second on a
penalty kick.
The goal would prove to be the game-winner after Seahawk leading
scorer Ted Scharfenberg netted his fifth of the year in the 70th
minute to cut their deficit in half.
After totaling a career-high 10 saves on Wednesday against York
(Pa.), Stevenson sophomore Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex,
N.J./Middlesex) added nine more on Saturday, including
seven in the second half to preserve the one-goal lead and lift the
Mustangs to their third win in the last four.
Paul Spranklin made six saves for the Seahawks.
Stevenson faces a quick turnaround as it hits the road on Sunday
for a 2:00 p.m., non-conference contest at Shenandoah.
