WASHINGTON, D.C. - After trailing Catholic by
three goals at halftime, Stevenson rallied with two in the second
half, but came up just short on the road in a match-up of two
regionally-ranked teams Wednesday in the nation's capital.
It was the second one-goal loss in as many meetings for the
Mustangs (4-3-1) against the Cardinals who also won last year's
meeting in Owings Mills, 3-2.
On Tuesday, Stevenson earned its first-ever ranking in the
program's 16-year history as it was ranked at No. 9 in the NSCAA's
NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region Poll.
Meanwhile, Catholic (8-0) entered the game at No. 4 in the
organization's Mid-Atlantic Region Poll after having allowed just
one goal in its previous seven games and three at home.
The Cardinals' first two goals came just 47 seconds apart in the
16th minute after Kelly Donnelly and Chelsea King each scored to
give the team a 2-0 lead. King would add her second with 8:40
remaining on Catholic's 10th shot of the half.
Stevenson came out inspired in the second half, scoring two
goals and holding a 9-5 edge in shots and a 3-1 margin in
corner kicks.
Sophomore Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin)
scored her third goal of the season, all in the last four games, to
get the Mustangs on the board in the 65th minute before freshman
Melinda Kane (Baltimore/Mercy) picked up her
team-leading fourth of the year with 2:33 remaining.
In goal, sophomore Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna
Park) suffered her first loss in six starts this season,
totaling three saves while allowing three goals, three more than
her previous five-game total.
Despite a rough first half, Ross still boasts a 1.01 goals
against average and .857 saves percentage through six games.
Stevenson will look to snap its two-game losing streak on
Saturday when it hosts Elizabethtown at Caves Athletics Complex
beginning at 4:30 p.m.
