OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Despite leading for nearly
45 minutes and getting a career-high 10 saves from sophomore
Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex),
Stevenson came up short in its upset bid against No. 9 York (Pa.),
falling 2-1 at Caves Athletics Complex Wednesday in the CAC opener
for both teams.
The loss snapped a five-game home winning streak for the
Mustangs (4-4, 0-1 CAC) who had surrendered just two goals in
their previous five contests at home. It also
snapped Stevenson's three-game CAC winning streak.
Meanwhile, the win extended the Spartans' unbeaten streak to 27
which is the nation's longest current streak. During that time, the
team is 24-0-3 after posting and 18-0-2 record a year ago.
York entered the game ranked at No. 9 in the latest D3soccer.com
Top 25 Poll and at No. 25 in Tuesday's NSCAA Division III National
Poll.
With the game tied at 1-1, Jon Ports scored the last of two
unanswered goals in the second half for the Spartans with just 2:21
remaining. It was his second goal of the season and second
game-winner after he found the back of an empty net from about
18 yards out.
The goal came on York's 19th shot of the half after Flannelly
came out of the box to try and corral the loose ball on a pass
from Travis Williams
Earlier in the half, Ports picked up his first assist of the
season on Williams' team-leading third goal in the 51st minute. It
was also the first allowed by the Mustangs at home since the
21st minute of a 6-1 win over Penn State-Harrisburg, snapping a
streak of 210 minutes.
For the third-straight game, Stevenson scored the game's first
goal less than six minutes in when freshman Ansger Otto
(Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) recorded his team-leading
fourth of the season off an assist from senior Vinny
Caltabiano (Lothian/Mount Saint Joseph).
York (6-0-1, 1-0 CAC) held a commanding 32-3 advantage in shots
including a 19-1 margin in the second half. The Spartans also
held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks while both teams had seven
fouls and one yellow card.
In addition to Flannelly's seven second half saves, York also
hit the post once and crossbar once in the final 20 minutes.
Stevenson looks to start a new streak at home on Saturday when
it welcomes St. Mary's (Md.) to Caves Athletics Complex. Game time
is at 2:00 p.m.
