OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson freshman
Lauren Weitzman (Westminster/Winters Mill) made a
career-high 11 saves, but Amanda Zyzak scored the game's only goal
on a rebound in front of the box in the 68th minute to give
Salisbury a 1-0 victory Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.
A win would have given the Mustangs (4-2-1, 1-1 CAC) sole
possession of first place in the CAC as the first team to start the
conference schedule undefeated in its first two games.
The loss snaps Stevenson's four-game win streak and is its first
since a 3-2 setback to Catholic on Oct. 1, 2008. It is also the
team's first CAC loss at home in over two years since a 3-0 defeat
against Mary Washington on Oct. 24, 2007.
For the Sea Gulls (3-1-2, 1-0 CAC), they keep their unbeaten
streak alive at five games while extending their shutout streak to
557 minutes. They have not allowed a goal since the 33rd minute of
its loss to Virginia Wesleyan in their season opener.
Meanwhile, the goal by Zyzak snapped Salisbury's string of 326
minutes without a goal as her second of the season was the team's
first since the 52nd minute of a 1-0 victory over Guilford on
September 6.
The goal came on a rebound after the Sea Gulls' Hilary Grove was
turned away by junior Kaitlyn Amos
(Baltimore/Catholic). The ball deflected out front where
Zyzak sent it into the upper left corner.
Just 10 minutes before Zyzak's goal, Weitzman kept the game
scoreless with her eighth save when Christina Eury tried to score
point blank from six yards after Julia Finecey hit the post.
Stevenson's best chance to score came in the 63rd minute when
freshman Melinda Kane (Baltimore/Mercy) just
missed wide right on a bicycle kick from inside the box.
Weitzman finished with 11 saves in her second career start after
making seven in her first start at Virginia Wesleyan.
Melissa Orgera had five saves for the Sea Gulls who
outshot the Mustangs 28-9 while holding a 5-1 edge in penalty
kicks.
Stevenson travels to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday for a
non-conference contest at Catholic beginning at 4:30 p.m.
