OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson sophomore
Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin) scored her
second goal of the season and her seventh career
game-winner as the Mustangs held off St. Mary's (Md.) for a
2-1 victory Wednesday at Caves Athletics Complex in their
conference opener.
The win was the fourth-straight for Stevenson (4-1-1, 1-0 CAC)
and its fifth in the last seven at home, extending the team's home
unbeaten streak to seven.
The Mustangs also matched their 4-1-1 start from a season ago
when they finished third in the CAC and advanced to the
quarterfinals of the ECAC Division III South Championship.
Senior Katie Decker (White Hall/Hereford)
scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career
just 2:48 into the game when she sent a corner kick bending toward
the goal that was misplayed by Seahawk keeper Lacey Johnson and
bounced inside the near post.
It was the second consecutive game in which Stevenson scored the
game's first goal less than three minutes in after sophomore
Samantha Novy (Severna Park/Severna Park) scored a
mere 1:11 into Saturday's 4-3 win over Frostburg State.
The Mustangs would hold its 1-0 lead into the second half before
Eyler scored unassisted in the 66th minute.
However, St. Mary's (2-3, 1-1 CAC) would cut the lead in
half when Lea Gonzalez scored her first goal of the
season on a shot from the left wing after she intercepted
an attempt by Stevenson to clear the ball out of its end.
It would be the only goal allowed by freshman Lauren
Weitzman (Westminster/Winters Mill) who faced 11 shots and
totaled three saves.
The Seahawks held a 16-10 edge in shots, including an 11-6
margin in the second half, but couldn't get the equalizer as
Weitzman and sophomore Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna
Park), who made her fifth start and also finished
with three saves.
Stevenson concludes its three-game homestand on Saturday when it
welcomes Salisbury to Owings Mills for a 2:30 p.m., start. The Sea
Gulls, who received votes in this week's NSCAA Division III
National Poll, are ranked fourth in the South Atlantic Region
with a 2-1-2 record this season. They are also unbeaten
in their last four.
