OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Seven different players
scored for Stevenson, including six with one goal
each, as the Mustangs opened the season with an
impressive 6-1 victory over Lancaster Bible Tuesday afternoon at
Caves Athletics Complex.
Stevenson (1-0) has now won its last four games dating back to
last season, including three-straight at home.
A total of 29 players saw action for the Mustangs, including 14
newcomers, two of which scored their first career points.
Freshman Ryan Pierce (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry
Hill) got things going in the ninth minute when he scored
his first career goal off an assist from sophomore Kyle
Baker (Mitchellville/Bowie).
Sophomore Ryan Brost (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell
Valley) followed with his second career tally just over
three minutes later on a rebound to push the lead to 2-0.
Sophomore Alex Hilliard (Vienna, Austria/American
International) and senior Brooks Kyker
(Westminster/Westminster) would then follow with
back-to-back goals in the 32nd and 35th minute,
respectively to give Stevenson a 4-0 halftime lead.
Sophomore Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex,
N.J./Middlesex), who made his fifth career start in goal,
made one save in the first 38:27 before giving way to freshman
Cory Spindler (Sykesville/Century) who also
totaled one in 18:33.
Junior Sean Scarselletta (Severna Park/Severna
Park) and freshman Brad Davis (Perry
Hall/Archbishop Curley) each netted second half goals
while four different players saw time in goal for the
Mustangs.
Lancaster Bible (0-1) got on the board in the 59th minute
when Jordan Westphal scored off a through ball from Lawrence Lartey
to cut the deficit to 5-1. Jake Kreider made 12 saves for the
Chargers who were outshot 35-8, including 26-2 in the first
half.
Stevenson will now embark on a four-game road trip beginning on
Saturday when it heads to Hampden-Sydney to take on Lynchburg in
the Hampden-Sydney Classic. Game time is at 2:30 p.m.
