Eckert Homers Twice in CAC Split With No. 12 York (Pa.)

Game 1 | Game 2

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Senior Max Eckert (Hyattsville/Perkiomen Prep) totaled three extra-base hits, including two home runs, and six RBIs to lead the Stevenson University baseball team to a split with No. 12 York (Pa.) in a CAC doubleheader at Bachman Sports Complex Tuesday.

The Mustangs (14-15, 10-5 CAC) won game two 9-3 after almost rallying from a nine-run deficit in game one before falling, 11-9. As a result, both teams remained in a tie for second place in the CAC, two games behind No. 2 Salisbury.

Eckert had a two-run homer and an RBI double in game one before adding a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly in the second.

Freshman Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) went 6-for-9 with two doubles over the two games while senior Griffin Stewart (Reisterstown/Bel Air) was 5-for-8 with two doubles and four RBIs.

After the Spartans (20-7, 10-5 CAC) scored seven runs, six unearned, over the their first two at-bats in game one off of senior starter Wade Keenan (Eldersburg/Liberty), Stevenson got two back in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by sophomore Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster).

York would add four more runs in the top of the fifth to increase its lead to nine before the Mustangs began their comeback.

Eckert's two-run homer, combined with a two-run double by sophomore Chris Maienshein (Finksburg/Westminster) in the fifth, cut the deficit to five before Stewart and junior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel) added RBI doubles in the sixth to pull the team within three.

Papuchis, Anderson and Stewart all went 3-for-5 while sophomore Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll) was 3-for-4.

Eckert drove in Stevenson's final run with a two-out, RBI double in the seventh before Jake Hughes earned his first save by getting Stewart to end the game with a ground out to shortstop with the tying runs on second and third.

Keenan suffered just his third loss in eight appearances this season after allowing 10 hits over two innings. The Mustangs totaled 19 hits, but stranded 11 runners on base and were limited by four errors.

Kyle Cook gave up 13 hits over five innings for the Spartans, but was the benefactor of his team's 11 runs on 11 hits and Stevenson's four errors.

York took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second of game two with three unearned runs, but that would be all the runs the Mustangs would allow.

Freshman Jake Sodeman (Davidsonville/South River) scattered six hits over 4.2 innings before junior Brian Spinazzola (Baltimore/Boys Latin) earned his second save after surrendering just two hits over the final 2.1 innings while striking out two.

Stevenson responded with four runs in the bottom of the second, capped off by a two-run single by Tarlow after an RBI double by Stewart who scored the team's second run on a passed ball.

Eckert hit his second two-run homer to highlight a three-run fifth before he and Stewart added sacrifice flies in the sixth. Eckert finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs while Stewart was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Mustangs will now embark on a three-game series with Salisbury, beginning with a nine-inning road contest on Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m. Live stats of the game can be accessed via the team's schedule page at www.gomustangsports.com.
