SALISBURY, Md. - Jordan Crystal went 4-for-7
with three runs and five RBIs, including a two-run triple in the
top of the third that proved to be the game-winner as Salisbury
advanced to the championship game of the CAC Baseball Championship
with a 21-4 victory over Stevenson Saturday at Sea Gull Field.
The top-seeded and sixth-ranked Sea Gulls (32-5) totaled 21 runs
on 25 hits, scoring at least one run in seven of the nine innings,
including nine in the top of the sixth to take a 16-2 lead.
The fourth-seeded Mustangs (16-19) now face a rematch with
third-seeded Wesley in an elimination game Sunday at noon
after the Wolverines scored five runs in the bottom of the
ninth to cap a 12-11 come-from-behind victory over
second-seeded St. Mary's (Md.).
In four games against the Mustangs this season, Salisbury has
outscored them 50-4 with each win coming at Sea Gull
Field.
The Sea Gulls took a 4-0 lead just three batters into
the game after Andrew Miller led off the game with a solo home
run to left center and Mike Celenza hit a two-run homer to right,
scoring Randy Boyle.
After Crystal's two-run triple increased the lead to six,
Stevenson scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the first
coming on an RBI-groundout by senior Wade Keenan
(Eldersburg/Liberty) that snapped a 26-inning
scoreless streak for the Mustangs against Salisbury.
Junior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel),
who finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs, added a two-out
RBI-single that scored senior Max Eckert
(Hyattsville/Perkiomen Prep). Papuchis also had a two-run
single in the bottom of the ninth.
On the mound, Eric Willey earned his second win of the day and
his CAC-leading eighth of the season, tying him with teammate Kyle
Judson. Willey scattered seven hits and struck out three over 6.0
innings after he earned the victory in Saturday's first game,
throwing the final 3.1 innings in relief during the Sea Gulls' 5-4,
11-inning victory over York (Pa.).
Sophomore Steve Krider
(Westminster/Westminster) suffered his third loss in six
starts this season after surrendering 16 hits and 13 earned runs in
5.2 innings.
