GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Four Juniata pitchers
combined to allow just one earned run, eight hits and nine
strikeouts over 14.0 innings as the Eagles swept a
non-conference doubleheader with the Stevenson University baseball
team Tuesday evening at Bachman Sports Complex, 3-1 and 5-4.
Juniata (8-9) picked up just its second sweep in six
doubleheaders this season and first since opening the 2009 season
with 14-8 and 4-1 wins over Northwestern (Minn.) on March 7.
In game one, William Hoffman did not allow an earned run and
scattered four hits while striking out six in earning a complete
game 3-1 victory. It was his first win in five appearances
this season.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI
singles by Greg Hoffman and Andrew Kriss.
The Mustangs (11-10) got a run back in the bottom of the third
when freshman Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert
Hall) scored, unearned, on a single to center by senior
Max Eckert (Hyattsville/Perkiomen Prep) after
advancing into scoring position on a passed ball.
Juniata added an insurance run in the top of the
seventh after Kyle Saxman led off the inning with a single,
was sacrificed to second and then scored on a single up the middle
by Adam Spadafora.
Sophomore Dustin Tarlow
(Finksburg/Westminster) led off the bottom of the
seventh with a walk before Hoffman retired the next three Mustangs
on a ground out and two fly outs to right.
Eckert finished the game 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks while
Anderson was 1-for-1 with a run and a walk. He also reached base
after being hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth.
Freshman D.J. Milliken (Owings/Northern) took
the loss for the Mustangs despite scattering seven hits over seven
innings and striking out five.
Game two saw much of the same as Eagle starter Nathan Burkey
held Stevenson to just three hits and one earned run over five
innings before the Mustangs tied the game at 4-4 with three
unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth that were the result of
three Juniata errors.
Trailing 4-1, Stevenson had runners on first and second with one
out following a fielding error before senior Marc Payne
(Salisbury/Parkside) was thrown out at third trying a late
steal when Eagle catcher Josh Roy lost the ball after blocking
a low pitch in the dirt.
The out was huge for Juniata as senior Griffin Stewart
(Reisterstown/Bel Air) drew a walk that would have loaded
the bases with one out.
Stewart and sophomore David Tolbert
(Arnold/Broadneck) then advanced on a passed ball that
would have scored a run before the next batter, sophomore
Andrew Chase (Ellicott City/River Hill) hit a
two-run double to right that would have tied the game.
Still with only one out, the Mustangs would have taken the
lead after Chase stole third and scored on a throwing error by Roy.
Instead, Stevenson only managed to tie the game going into the
top of the seventh where Kevin Small tripled to center and then
scored on an RBI single by Dane Ott to give the Eagles the one run
victory.
Sophomore Chris Maienshein
(Finksburg/Westminster) suffered the loss after entering
in relief of freshman Jake Sodeman (Davidsonville/South
River) who allowed just two hits and one earned run over
four innings in his first start of the season.
Stevenson finished the second game 1-for-7 with runners in
scoring position after going 1-for-8 in game one.
The Mustangs look to regroup when they return to CAC play at No.
21-ranked and CAC unbeaten York (Pa.) on Wednesday. Stevenson has
lost two of its last three in conference after starting the season
6-0. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m. Live stats are available through
