CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Three different
pitchers combined for seven strikeouts while allowing just eight
hits, including sophomore John Skrynecki (Ellicott
City/Cardinal Gibbons) as the Stevenson University
baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-0 shutout
victory at Washington Tuesday at Athey Baseball Park.
Stevenson (10-5) is now 4-5 in non-conference games this season,
all of which have come on the road.
Skrynecki picked up his second win in his third appearance this
season, allowing just one hit over three innings after entering the
game in relief of sophomore Steve Krider
(Westminster/Westminster).
Krider surrendered just four hits over four innings while
striking out four in his first career start. Prior to Tuesday,
Krider had hit .250 in five games with three runs and two RBIs.
The Mustangs would get all the offense they would need with
three runs in the top of the second on RBI hits by
freshman Mitch Berman (Hampstead/North Carroll),
sophomore Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll) and
sophomore Chris Maienshein
(Finksburg/Westminster).
Stevenson added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI-triple
by senior Wade Keenan (Eldersburg/Liberty) and a
sacrifice fly by junior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good
Counsel).
Keenan finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while
Berman, Van Beek and sophomore Dustin Tarlow
(Finksburg/Westminster) all had one hit each as the
Mustangs scored all five of their runs on just five hits,
four walks and two Shoremen errors.
Meanwhile, Stevenson benefited from Washington's inability to
drive in runs as the Shoremen went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring
position and left 17 runners on base. Matt Boucher, Tony Tozzolo
and Brian Kramer each stranded four runners on base and went a
combined 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Following their five-game road trip in which they went 2-3,
the Mustangs return home to face Wesley in a CAC contest Wednesday
at Bachman Sports Complex in Glen Burnie. Stevenson is 6-0 in
conference play this season, two games ahead of York (Pa.) who is
4-0. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
