Averett Edges Baseball in Error-Filled Contest, 5-4

Box score

DANVILLE, Va. - Jacob Waller picked up his third win in his fourth start of the season, limiting the Stevenson University baseball team to just three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out 10 in a complete game effort to lead the Cougars to a 5-4 victory Friday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.

With Averett (8-10-1) clinging to a one-run lead in the top of the ninth, Waller struck out the side to give the team its third win out of the last four.

After senior Sean Dolan (Odenton/Arundel) hit a two-out double to left center, Waller got sophomore Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll) to strike out swinging to end the game with the game-tying run in scoring position.

Waller struck out seven different Mustangs, including Van Beek who he fanned in four out of his five plate appearances. Van Beek also walked.

The Mustangs (9-5) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by junior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel) following an RBI double by senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake).

The Cougars would briefly reclaim a one-run lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, both courtesy of Andrew Higgins' who tied the game with an RBI-single and later scored on a double to right center by Eric Sibrizzi.

Senior Wade Keenan (Eldersburg/Liberty) would tie the game in third with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Dolan.

Averett broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth following a pair of back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. After advancing one base on a ground out, Michael Moore and Jake Loye both scored on Stevenson's third error of the contest, giving the Cougars what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Mustangs committed five errors in the contest which led to four of the Averett's runs being unearned while the Cougars had three errors.

Baione made his third start of the year on the mound for Stevenson, allowing just one earned run on six hits over 4.0 innings before leaving the game in the fifth with an apparent arm injury.

Sophomore Chris Maienshein (Finksburg/Westminster) and junior Brian Spinazzola (Baltimore/Boys Latin) combined to finish the final four innings.

Dolan and sophomore Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster) each finished the game 2-for-4 while Baione and junior Dan Leonard (Cambridge/South Dorchester) went 1-for-2 with one RBI apiece.

Stevenson concludes its five-game road trip on Tuesday at Washington (Md.). First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
