WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Stevenson University
baseball team totaled nine runs on 11 hits, including six extra
base hits, but had to withstand a six-run seventh inning to pick up
its second non-conference win in the last four days, 9-8 at
Catholic Tuesday evening at Robert Talbot Field.
A two-run homer by senior Max Eckert
(Hyattsville/Perkiomen Prep) in the top of the seventh
proved to be the game-winner for the Mustangs (2-1) and was the
second in three games this season for Eckert.
In game one at Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, Eckert hit a two-run
double with two outs in the top of the fifth to propel Stevenson to
a 3-2 victory in its season opener.
Senior Sean Dolan (Odenton/Arundel) went
2-for-3 while junior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good
Counsel) and freshman Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury,
Pa./Calvert Hall) each went 2-for-4 with Anderson and
sophomore Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll)
scoring twice.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first
thanks to two unearned runs and extended to 6-2 with a four-run
fourth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Anderson and sophomore
Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster).
An RBI double by Dolan in the sixth and Eckert's first home run
of the season gave Stevenson a 9-2 advantage heading into the
bottom of the seventh.
After an error allowed the leadoff hitter to reach
base, the Cardinals (0-1) strung together three consecutive
hits and a hit by pitch to cut the deficit to 9-5 before
back-to-back doubles by Matt Grieb and Sean Earley with two
outs pulled Catholic within one.
Cory Hudson followed with a walk and then moved into scoring
position with Tommy Little at the plate.
However, sophomore Randy Bond (Brandywine/Riverdale
Baptist), who pitched the final 2.1 innings, was able to
get Little to strike out swinging and preserve the lead for
Stevenson.
The importance of the strikeout was multiplied after the umpire
called the game just two batters into the bottom of the eighth
because of darkness.
Junior Derrick Nason (Catonsville/Reservoir)
picked up the win in his first start after allowing just one earned
run and scattering four hits over five innings.
Stevenson hosts Gallaudet next Wednesday at Bachman Sports
Complex in Glen Burnie. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m.
