OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the second-straight year, the Stevenson women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking shootout defeat at home in the CAC Women's Soccer Championship as Mary Washington won its 13th title after edging the Mustangs 4-2 on penalty kicks in the championship game Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.

The Eagles (12-4-5) will make their 13th appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship and first since 2004 after prevailing on penalty kicks for the second-straight game. On Wednesday, the team upset top-seeded Salisbury on the road in penalty kicks, 2-0.

Meanwhile, Stevenson (14-3-2) remains unbeaten in its last 11 consecutive, but is 0-2 in shootouts the last two seasons after Hood won 3-2 on penalty kicks a year ago to advance to the conference tournament semifinals.

The Mustangs will await word on Monday to see if they will be making their third appearance in the NCAA tournament and first since 2006. Selections for the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship will be released Monday at 9:00 a.m., on NCAA.com.

After trailing 2-0 in the game's first 30 minutes, Mary Washington scored two unanswered goals to force overtime, including the game-tying goal by Sarah Tryon with just 1:43 left in the second half.

The Eagles then scored on four of its five shootout attempts with Lilly Briedis-Ruiz scoring the clincher on a controversial goal that hit just inside the crossbar before coming back out on the final shot.

Sophomore Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin) scored her CAC-leading 20th goal of the season unassisted in the game's eighth minute to give Stevenson a 1-0 lead. It also extended her streak to nine-straight games with at least one goal.

In just 39 career games, Eyler has totaled 42 goals and 93 points, 12 goals and 36 points shy of the CAC record. She has scored at least one goal in 24 career games and is just two goals short of tying her own CAC single-season record set last year.

Eyler would then pick up an assist on a goal by junior Heather Redding (Street/North Harford), her eighth of the year, in the 30th minute to push the lead to two before Bridget Dooley scored just 4:02 later on a pass from Nicole Dierkes to pull Mary Washington to within one at halftime.

Stevenson dominated the first half statistically, outshooting the Eagles 9-2 and holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

However, Mary Washington held the Mustangs without a shot in the second half while totaling five of its own, the last of which resulted in the game-tying goal by Tryon off a pass from Karen Strat in the 89th minute.

The Eagles outshot Stevenson 9-4 over the final three periods.

Freshman Lauren Weitzman (Westminster/Winters Mill) made four saves for the Mustangs while Tina Brehm had five for Mary Washington.
