YORK, Pa. - Brett Sauerberger scored his second
goal of the season and the second of the game for York (Pa.)
which proved to be the game-winner as the Spartans held off a late
rally from Stevenson en route to winning their fourth
CAC championship Saturday at Graham Field in the title game of
the 2009 CAC Men's Soccer Championship.
The Spartans (15-1-4) remained unbeaten in 19 out of 20 games
this season, including 10 out of 11 at home, while extending their
unbeaten streak against the Mustangs to 12.
York has won three of the last five CAC championships
and with the conference's automatic bid, will be making their
fifth-straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer
Championship.
For Stevenson (12-9), who had its seven-game win streak snapped
one shy of the school record, will await to see if its season will
continue when selections for the ECAC Division III South Men's
Soccer Championship are released Monday afternoon.
The Spartans led just 1-0 at halftime despite statistically
dominating the first half where they held an 11-0 advantage in
shots.
In addition, Stevenson was whistled for 10 fouls and handed five
yellow cards.
Mike O'Connell scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season
in the 36th minute off a pass from Jon Ports who picked up his
team-leading eighth assist to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
York outshot the Mustangs 23-4, but couldn't get
the clincher until the 73rd minute when Sauerberger scored his
second goal in the last three games on a feed from Lucas Emil to
push the lead to 2-0.
Sophomore Kyle Baker (Mitchellville/Bowie)
netted his eighth goal of the year from freshman
Roderick Linkonko (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) in
the 87th minute to pull Stevenson within one, but the team could
not get another shot off in the final 3:28.
Sophomore Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex,
N.J./Middlesex) made five saves for the Mustangs while
Ryan Hock allowed one goal, but did not have to make a save to pick
up his ninth win of the season.
