ARLINGTON, Va. - Christina LaVigna totaled nine
kills and 10 digs to lead Marymount (Va.) to a 25-19, 25-12,
25-19 victory over Stevenson Wednesday night at the Verizon Center
securing the sixth and final spot for the Saints in the 2009 CAC
Volleyball Championship and eliminating the Mustangs.
Errors plagued Stevenson (12-19, 2-6 CAC) as it suffered its
four-straight conference loss and eigth in the last 10. The
Mustangs posted a .120 hitting percentage, committing 15 attack
errors in 83 attempts. They also had six service errors.
Juniors Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) and
Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott Key) as
well as freshman Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck)
all had a team-high seven kills as the trio totaled 21 of the
team's 25 kills.
Gabbard also led the team with nine kills, tying her with
sophomore Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson). Sophomore
Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) finished with
two kils, five digs and 23 assists.
LaVigna was one of three players to total at least 10 digs for
Marymount (18-11, 3-5 CAC), joining Melissa Warren and Chelsea
Gates. Warren also had 26 assists while Michelle McCormick finished
with seven kills and seven digs.
The sixth-seeded Saints will travel to third-seeded Gallaudet
next Tuesday, November 3 in the first round of the conference
tournament and fifth-seeded St. Mary's (Md.) will head to
fourth-seeded York (Pa.).
The winner of St. Mary's and York will face top-seeded Salisbury
next Thursday, November 5 and the winner of Marymount and Gallaudet
will take on second-seeded Mary Washington.
This year's CAC championship game will take place on Saturday,
November 7.
Meanwhile, Stevenson will conclude the 2009 season with two
matches at Messiah on Saturday. The Mustangs will play the host
Falcons at 10:00 a.m., before facing Eastern Mennonite at noon.
