OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by three first half
goals, including two by sophomore Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin), the Stevenson women's soccer team
looked impressive as it moved into first place in the CAC with a
4-1 victory over York (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon at Caves Athletics
Complex.
The win was the seventh-straight for the Mustangs (11-3-1, 6-1
CAC) and the second-straight against the Spartans who were ranked
at No. 7 in the first South Atlantic Region rankings released on
Wednesday.
Last year, Stevenson edged York on the road 1-0 on a goal by
Samantha Novy (Severna Park/Severna Park) in the
37th minute on Oct. 21, 2008.
All three of the Mustangs' three goals in the opening half came
in the first 28 minutes, beginning with Eyler's unassisted tally in
the 15th.
Junior Allison Humphries (Bel Air/John Carroll)
would score the eventual game-winner with her second of the season
off a pass from senior Lauren Bauer (Baltimore/Bel
Air) in the 22nd minute before Eyler added her third just
over five minutes later at 27:09.
The assist was the second point of the season for Bauer and the
third of her career, all coming on assists. In addition to picking
up an assist in the team's 10-0 win versus Gallaudet, she also
assisted on Novy's game-winner against York last year.
Stevenson held a 3-0 halftime lead despite only holding a 7-3
edge in shots and being even in corner kicks at 3-3.
Determined, the Spartans (12-4-1, 5-1-1 CAC) would get on the
board in the first two minutes of the second half as Kat Sipes
netted her fourth of the season unassisted at 46:51 to cut the
deficit to 3-1.
York outshot Stevenson 13-3 in the second half and held a 5-0
advantage in corner kicks, but Mustang freshman Lauren
Weitzman (Wesminster/Winters Mill) totaled three of her
five saves in the half and freshman Melinda Kane
(Baltimore/Mercy) added her eighth goal of the season in
the 68th minute for insurance as Stevenson handed the Spartans
their first conference loss in the last eight games.
Spanarkel made two saves for the Spartans.
