STEVENSON, Md. - For the second time in as many
matches this season, Goucher used a strong performance from Megan
Smith to hand Stevenson a 3-1 loss in non-conference women's
volleyball action Tuesday night at Student Union Gymnasium with
scores of 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21.
Smith, the reigning Landmark Conference player of the week,
totaled 19 kills and 19 digs, both game-highs, to lead the Gophers
(12-9) to their fourth consecutive win and second-straight against
a team from the CAC.
Junior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) tied
her season-high with 18 kills to lead the Mustangs (10-12) who had
their three-game win streak snapped.
In the first match-up between the two teams, Smith had 20 kills
and 19 digs to lead Goucher to a 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 victory
at the Sports & Recreation Center.
Despite seven kills from Mercer, the Gophers stormed out to a
six-point victory in the first set thanks to 14 kills and a .344
hitting percentage 11 Stevenson errors.
The second set featured 11 ties and four lead changes, but after
the Mustangs rallied from a 24-21 deficit to pull within one at
24-23, Kasey Quinn totaled her ninth kill of the game off an assist
from Smith to give Goucher a 2-0 lead.
Quinn also finished the game with a double double, totaling 10
kills and 10 digs.
However, Stevenson would take a five-point victory in the third
set despite falling behind 7-0 and losing by as many as eight.
Trailing 13-5, the Mustangs closed the set on a 20-7 run, thanks in
large part to the Gophers who had 15 errors, including eight attack
and four reception. They also had three service errors.
Smith took control of the game in the fourth, totaling seven of
her 19 kills and not committing an error in 15 attempts while
adding five digs to lead Goucher to its third-straight win over
Stevenson.
Freshman Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck)
posted her eighth double double of the season and fourth in the
last seven games with 14 kills and a team-high 13 digs. She also
had four service aces.
Combined with Mercer, the duo totaled 32 of the team's 47 kills.
Junior Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott
Key) added seven.
Sophomore Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun)
had 42 assists and 11 digs.
Stevenson travels to Mary Washington on Thursday for a CAC
contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
