CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Sara Rutkowski had
two points to lead Washington (Md.) to a 3-0 victory over the
Stevenson University field hockey team Wednesday night on Kibler
Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Shorewomen (3-1) held a 16-2 edge in shots and a commanding
18-6 advantage in penalty corners en route to their second win in
three games at home this season. In three home games, Washington
has allowed just one goal while scoring seven.
For the Mustangs (3-4), sophomore Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) made seven saves while sophomore
Natalie DiPaulo (Baltimore/Perry Hall) was
credited with a defensive save, her first of the season.
Zimmerman's seven saves were two short of her season-high set in
a 1-0 loss at St. Mary's (Md.) on September 3.
Both of Rutkowski's points came on assists on the Shorewomen's
first two goals. With just over 10 minutes left in the first
half, she set up what proved to be the game-winning goal when
Candace Gaull scored off a penalty corner to give Washington a
1-0 halftime lead.
Zimmerman made five of her seven saves in the first half to keep
Stevenson in the game despite being outshot 8-0 and on the short
end of a 13-1 advantage in corners.
Rutkowski also assisted on the Shorewomen's second
goal of the game, sending a long pass into the middle of the field
to Danielle Rosato who scored with 18:21 remaining.
Amy Spadanuta capped the scoring less than three
minutes later when she redirected a loose ball with 16:52
to play.
Stevenson's first shot came with under six
minutes remaining in the contest and both were stopped
by Elena Nicholoff.
The Mustangs look for their third win in the last
five games when they return to action on Saturday versus St.
Lawrence at William Smith in the William Smith Invitational
beginning at 2:00 p.m.
