OWINGS MILLS, Md. - California Lutheran, the
seventh-ranked team in the NSCAA West Region poll, scored two
goals in each half en route to a 4-0 victory Sunday at the Caves
Complex.
The win was the second in as many days for the Regals (2-2) on
the Stevenson campus after they defeated Christopher Newport 1-0 in
double overtime on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the loss was the first for the Mustangs (4-2-1) in
their last five games since a 2-1 defeat at Alvernia in the
championship of the Crusader Cup on August 31.
California Lutheran's Rosemarie Lombardi had a hand in three of
the Regals' four goals, scoring one in each half and assisting on
Brittany Clark's game-winner in the 39th minute. She then scored
her first goal, unassisted, with just 43 seconds remaining before
halftime.
The Regals outshot Stevenson 13-1 in the first half en
route to a 2-0 lead against Mustang junior Michelle
McConnell (Pylesville/North Harford) who was making her
second start in goal this season. She made three first half saves
before giving way to freshman Brittany Ross
(Millersville/Severna Park) in the second half.
Ross faced just five shots, stopping three of them, but the two
goals she allowed were twice as many as she had allowed in six
previous games. Despite that, she still boasts a 0.61 goals against
average, an .833 saves percentage and a 4-0-1 record this season.
Lombardi added her second goal in the 73rd minute before Rebekah
Casas scored her first career goal with just 3:04 remaining to cap
the scoring.
The Mustangs will look to get back on track when they face local
rival McDaniel at home on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Stevenson won last
year's meeting, 2-1 at Westminster on Oct. 2, 2007.
