Salisbury, MD - The Villa Julie Baseball Team finished 3rd in
the CAC Tournament this weekend. The Mustangs caused the only upset
of the tournament during the 2nd game on Saturday, when Villa
thumped #3 seeded Wesley College 28-8. The Mustangs advanced to the
semi-final against the University of Mary Washington but could not
continue their winning form, losing 9-4.
Against the Wolverines, the Mustangs opened the scoring on a
solo Home Run by Junior Ryan Baione in the first,
but Wesley answered on a 2 run homer by Sophomore Grant Morlock in
the bottom of the first. After Villa notched it at 2 in the
2nd, the Stang's proceeded to score 11 in the 3rd, and 14
more in the final 3 innings to secure the 5th showdown between the
Mustangs and the Eagles of Mary Washington. Sophomore
Derrick Nason picked up his 7th victory of the
season, and Senior Phil Kraska finished the final
4 innings to earn his first save of the season. Offensively,
Freshman Kyle Van Beek was 4-6 with 4 runs scored,
Baione was 4-7 with 3 runs scored, 1 HR and 2
RBI's, Junior Wade Keenan was 3-5 with 3 runs
scored a double and 2 RBI's, Sophomore George
Papuchis was 2-4 with 3 Runs scored and 4 RBI's, and
Junior Griffin Stewart was 2-4 with a triple, a
Home Run and 6 RBI's in the game.
In Game 2, the Mustangs had to go against #2 seed UMW to try and
get to the final day of the tournament. The Eagles had won
the season series 2-1, but only outscored the Mustangs by 1 run.
In the first round they beat the Mustangs 8-5 and for
the 2nd time in 4 days Jr starter Andrew Cox shut the Mustangs down
and earned his 3rd victory of the year over Villa.
Offensively, Freshman Kyle Van Beek picked
up 2 hits and Junior Wade Keenan picked up 2 hits
while, Senior Buddy Breidenbaugh, Junior
Griffin Stewart, Sophomore George
Papuchis, and Senior Jimmy Smith all hit
solo home runs for the Mustangs. Junior Ryan
Baione pitched 6 innings allowing 4 Earned Runs to take
the loss.
The Mustangs are back in action Tuesday at Gettysburg for a 3:30
start
