VJC drops CAC opening round game to Mary Washington

Fredericksburg, VA - The #5 seeded Villa Julie Baseball team traveled to face the #2 seed, the University of Mary Washington in the opening round of the CAC Tournament. The Mustangs battled to the end but could not produce the win, losing 8-5.

Mary Washington opened up the scoring in the 2nd inning on a string of soft line drives and seeing eye singles to take a 4 run lead that the Mustangs could not recover from. UMW pitcher Andrew Cox pitched 8 2/3 innings giving up 11 hits but striking out 10 Mustang hitters.

That didn't stop VJC from battling till the last out. With 2 outs in the top of the 9th, the Mustangs plated a run and had the tying run up to bat but just couldn't get the big hits. Offensively, Freshman Kyle Van Beek was 3-4 with a double, Junior Ryan Baione was 2-5 with a double and an RBI, and Sophomore George Papuchis was also 2-5.

The Mustangs play at home vs #6 seed York College on Thursday at 3:30pm. The loser goes home, the winner will play at 12:30 on Saturday at Salisbury.
