Fredericksburg, VA - The #5 seeded Villa Julie Baseball team
traveled to face the #2 seed, the University of Mary Washington in
the opening round of the CAC Tournament. The Mustangs battled to
the end but could not produce the win, losing 8-5.
Mary Washington opened up the scoring in the 2nd inning on a
string of soft line drives and seeing eye singles to take a 4 run
lead that the Mustangs could not recover from. UMW pitcher Andrew
Cox pitched 8 2/3 innings giving up 11 hits but striking out 10
Mustang hitters.
That didn't stop VJC from battling till the last out. With 2
outs in the top of the 9th, the Mustangs plated a run and had the
tying run up to bat but just couldn't get the big hits.
Offensively, Freshman Kyle Van Beek was 3-4
with a double, Junior Ryan Baione was 2-5 with a
double and an RBI, and Sophomore George Papuchis
was also 2-5.
The Mustangs play at home vs #6 seed York College on Thursday at
3:30pm. The loser goes home, the winner will play at 12:30 on
Saturday at Salisbury.
