York, PA - Villa entered the game needing a split to jump ahead
of York in the CAC tournament and get the #5 seed to avoid
travelling to the #1 seed.
The Spartans came out in game one and took it to the Mustangs by
beating them by a score of 5-0. Jason Christianberry picked up the
victory pitching a complete game shutout allowing just 3 hits and 7
K's. It was the first time the Mustangs who average 11.2 runs
per game had been shut out this season.
Game two became a marathon between 2 teams that just didn't want
to go down easy. The Mustangs opened up the scoring with 1 in
the first. York countered with 1 in the 3rd, and 3 more in
the 5th to take a 4-1 lead. The Mustangs started the 6th with
2 quick outs. After a single, an error aloud the inning to continue
and the Mustangs offense woke up by scoring 5 unearned runs that
inning by hitting 3 consecutive doubles by
Sophomore George Papuchis, Senior
Jimmy Smith, and Junior Ryan
Baione.
York answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie it,
where it would stay deadlocked until the 10th. In the top of
the 10th, the Mustangs rallied for 3 runs, only to see York come
back in the bottom of the 10th with 3 to tie it again.
Finally in the top of the 9th, Smith for the Mustangs led off with
a single up the middle and advanced to 2nd on a throwing
error. Baione then hit his 3rd double of the night off the
right field fence to plate Smith. Derrick Nason would pitch 2
scoreless innings to pick up his 2nd victory of the week vs
York.
Offensively, Smith and Baione were each 4-6 with 2 RBI's and
Papuchis, Junior Wade Keenan, and Freshman
Kyle Van Beek each added 2 hits with Papuchis
picking up 2 RBI's. Keenan also pitched 3 1/3 innings in
relief striking out 5 to hold the Mustangs in the Game.
