ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - After dropping a 3-0
decision to St. Mary's (Md.) in the regular season, the Stevenson
University women's volleyball team won the opening set and battled
the second-seeded Seahawks on the road before falling in the
semifinals of the CAC Volleyball Championship Thursday night, 3-1.
The Mustangs (31-7) conclude the season with 31 wins, setting a
new school record and smashing the previous mark of 31 set in 2005
and 2007. The team will wait until Monday to see if it will be one
of eight teams selected to the ECAC Championship.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's (27-6), ranked seventh in the NCAA
Mid-Atlantic Region, advance to the championship game where they
will face No. 20-ranked Salisbury who extended its winning streak
to 34 matches with a 3-1 decision over fourth-seeded Mary
Washington.
Stevenson posted a higher hitting percentage, more digs and more
blogs than the Seahawks, but the hosts totaled eight more kills
which proved to be the difference in the last three sets as St.
Mary's won all three by a combined nine points.
Sophomore Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott
Key) led the Mustangs with 13 kills while senior
Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial) totaled 12
along with a team-best 20 digs.
Stevenson took the first set after hitting .312, totaling 12
kills with just two errors in 32 attempts, compared a .176
percentage for the Seahawks.
However, St. Mary's made the most of the final three error
plagued sets to edge out a victory and avoid the upset-minded
Mustangs. Stevenson committed 18 hitting errors, eight service
errors and seven reception errors while the Seahawks had 25 attack
errors and 14 service errors, but just three reception errors.
Junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de Grace/Mt.
Zion) had 37 assists and 12 digs as she was one of four
Mustangs with at least 12 digs. In addition to Eller's 20, senior
Julie Olson (Spofford, N.H./Keene) had 18 and
freshman Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) added
12.
