OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Rachelle Buhrman made a
season-high 16 saves in 110 minutes of play and stopped three of
four penalty kicks to lead sixth-seeded Hood to an upset of the
third-seeded Stevenson University women's soccer team Saturday
at the Caves Complex in the quarterfinals of the CAC Women's Soccer
Championship.
The Blazers (10-7-2), who had won three of their last five since
losing at Stevenson 2-0 back on October 7, converted three of its
four penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals on Tuesday where
they will travel to No. 2 seed St. Mary's (Md.).
Meanwhile, Stevenson (11-5-4) remains unbeaten in its last five
as today's game officially counts as a tie and the Mustangs
will wait until next week to find out if they will be playing in
either the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship or ECAC
championship.
The NCAA selections will be announced next Monday, November 10.
It was the fourth overtime of the season for both
teams with Hood posting a 1-1-2 record while the
Mustangs are now 0-0-4.
As for Saturday, Stevenson outshot the Blazers 31-8 and held a
15-4 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't get a shot past
Buhrman who made eight saves in each half and one in the first
overtime. She also benefited from a team save by Jennifer Fischer
in the 67th minute.
Hood did not register its first shot until Alexa Hubicki sent a
header high over the top of the cross bar from inside the box after
the Blazers gained their first corner kick in the 48th minute.
In the shootout, Hubicki netted the first attempt after senior
Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored
for Stevenson.
However, that would be the final converted attempt for the
Mustangs as Buhrman stopped three consecutive shots while Liz
Rakowski and Casey Miller were both successful on their attempts.
Buhrman stopped shots by sophomores Heather Redding
(Street/North Harford) and Allison Humphries (Bel
Air/John Carroll) and freshman Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin) who have combined for 27 goals between
them, 21 of which have come from Eyler to set a new CAC single
season record.
For the Mustangs, freshman Brittany Ross
(Millersville/Severna Park) made three saves as she went
unbeaten in goal for the 14th time in 16 starts this season.
