SALISBURY, Md. - The Stevenson University
women's volleyball team committed 42 errors, including 26 attack
errors, as it fell two games behind Salisbury for first place in
the CAC following a 3-0 loss to the Sea Gulls Tuesday night in
front of 585 fans at the Maggs Center.
The 26-24, 25-13, 25-16 loss snapped a four-game win streak for
the Mustangs (20-3, 3-2 CAC) who hold a half-game lead over
Gallaudet for third place in the CAC following the Bison's 3-0
victory at Hood Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the 24th-ranked Sea Gulls (23-1, 5-0 CAC) have won 23
consecutive games since losing their season opener at No. 1-ranked
and two-time national champion Juniata.
Stevenson was very competitive in the first set, rallying from a
23-19 deficit to tie it at 24-24 before falling 26-24.
Sophomore Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott
Key), who finished the game with 11 kills, totaled six on
six attempts in the first set, but the Mustangs were limited by two
service errors, four receiving errors and six attack errors.
Katsampis totaled eight kills on her first eight attempts before
committing her first error on set point in the second. She finished
with 11 kills and three errors in 14 attempts for a .571 hitting
percentage.
After the first set, Stevenson had a negative hitting percentage
in the second and third sets, committing eight errors with a
minus-.067 percentage in the second and 12 errors and a
minus-.200 percentage in the third.
In addition to its poor attack percentage, Stevenson also
committed 11 receiving errors.
Freshman Paige Norvell (Newark, Del./St.
Elizabeth) had six kills for the Mustangs while reigning
CAC Player of the Week, junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de
Grace/Mt. Zion), had two kills and 22 assists.
Sophomore Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) had
two kills and four total blocks, but also had seven attack errors
on nine attempts.
Senior Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial)
had 11 digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday when it travels to
Catholic for a tri-match with the Cardinals and Roanoke.
