YORK, Pa. - Stevenson University women's soccer
freshman Samantha Novy (Severna Park/Severna Park)
scored the game's only goal, securing a home game in the
quarterfinals of the 2008 CAC Women's Soccer Championship for the
Mustangs in the process, as they beat York (Pa.), 1-0 Tuesday
afternoon.
The win assures Stevenson (11-5-2, 5-1-1 CAC) of at least fourth
place in the CAC standings which guarantees the Mustangs a home
game. Stevenson also still has a shot at finishing among the
top two teams in the conference and earning a first round bye.
The conference tournament begins with quarterfinals on Saturday,
November 1.
The Mustangs are currently in third place in the CAC standings,
a game-and-a-half ahead of Mary Washington and two-and-a-half ahead
of York.
Stevenson travels to Mary Washington on Saturday to conclude the
regular season while St. Mary's (Md.), currenlty a half-game over
Salisbury for first place, travels to Sea Gulls to conclude the
regular season.
Despite being outshot 24-5, the Mustangs were able to total the
game's only tally in the 37th minute when Novy scored on a
one-touch off an assist from junior Lauren Bauer
(Baltimore/Bel Air).
The Spartans (9-6-1, 4-3 CAC) also held a 10-0 advantage in
corner kicks.
Freshman Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna
Park) made eight saves in picking up her 11th win and
sixth shutout in 13 decisions this season. Her eight saves
were second only to the 11 she had in a 3-0 loss at St. Mary's
(Md.) on October 11.
Five of Ross's eight saves came in the second half where York
held a 19-2 edge in shots and a 7-0 margin in corners.
Stevenson also had a team save in the 58th minute to preserve
its one-goal lead. The Spartans also hit the post in the 81st
minute.
The Mustangs face Mary Washington on the road Saturday beginning
at 1:00 p.m.
