OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson University
women's soccer freshman Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin) totaled her third hat trick of the
season, including second-straight, to lead the Mustangs to a 5-1
victory over Marymount (Va.) Saturday afternoon at the Caves
Complex.
The win gave Stevenson (10-5-2, 4-1-1 CAC) its seventh season
out of 15 overall with at least 10 wins and third out of the last
four.
Eyler's three goals raised her season total to 21 to set a new
CAC single-season record, surpassing Goucher's Sarah Weaver and
Salisbury's Kate Weaver who each scored 20 goals in 1997 and 2006,
respectively.
Eyler has also totaled 47 points through 17 games this season
and need just one more to pass Sarah Weaver's CAC record of
48 set in 2006.
Eyler picked up her first goal less than 11 minutes in when she
scored off an assist from freshman Samantha Novy (Severna
Park/Severna Park) at 10:33.
After the Saints' Cara McCormick tied the game at 1-1 with her
second goal of the year in the 31st minute, Eyler answered just
over two minutes later with record-tying 20th goal before breaking
the record with 4:19 remaining before halftime to give the Mustangs
a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Beth Novak (Abingdon/Bel Air) picked
up her first assist on the record-breaking goal.
Playing in her final regular season home game, Tonia
Cristino (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), who has totaled 47
goals, 19 assists and 113 points in her career, tallied her eighth
goal of the season in the 60th minute off an assist
from sophomore Allison Humphries (Bel Air/John
Carroll).
In the 66th minute, captain Meghan Smith (Kent
Island/Kent Island) scored her first career goal to
cap the scoring for Stevenson. The junior defender now has one goal
and one assist in three seasons with the team.
Freshman Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna
Park) made five saves in earning her 10th win of the
season before giving way to junior Michelle McConnell
(Pylesville/North Harford) who played the final 12:04 in
goal for the Mustangs.
Stevenson, currently in fourth place in the CAC, travels to
third-place York (Pa.) on Tuesday. The Spartans are a half-a-game
ahead of the Mustangs in the standings with a 4-1 conference
record.
