OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Catholic scored two first
half goals while doubling up the Stevenson University women's
soccer team in shots en route to a 3-2 victory Wednesday afternoon
at the Caves Complex.
The win was just the third in eight games this season
for the Cardinals (3-4-1) who had lost four of their last
six coming into Wednesday's game.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs (6-4-2) have lost back-to-back games for
the first time this season after going unbeaten in eight of their
first 10.
Suzie Peters and Kelly Donnely each had one goal and one assist
for Catholic, assisting on each others' goal. With the game tied at
2-2 in the 77th minute, Donnely took a pass from Peters just inside
the top of the box and lofted a shot over the head of Stevenson
freshman Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park)
for the game-winner.
After the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the game
on the sixth goal of the year by senior Tonia Cristino
(Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), Peters scored at 6:13 off an
assist from Donnely to tie the game for the first time, 1-1.
Helene Nicoletti then scored on an indirect kick from 20 yards
out in the 11th minute to give the Cardinals its first lead, 2-1,
which they would hold into halftime.
Neither team would score again until the 74th minute when
Mustang freshman Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin) scored her CAC-leading 12th goal of
the season, assisted by sophomore Heather Redding
(Street/North Harford) to tie the game for the second
time.
Donnely would then notch the game-winner less than four minutes
later to give the Cardinals the lead for good.
Making her third start this season, junior Michelle
McConnell (Pylesville/North Harford) made one save in the
first half before giving way to Ross who made three saves over the
final 45 minutes.
After being outshot 6-3 in the first half, Stevenson totaled 11
shots in the second, compared to 12 for the Cardinals, while
holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. However, Tere Rossi, who
made six of Catholic's seven saves in the game, totaled
five in the second half.
Stevenson returns to conference play on Saturday, hosting Wesley
beginning at 2:30 p.m.
