OWINGS MILLS, MD - The Villa Julie Women's soccer team matched
highly regarded York College for over 90 minutes, almost coming
close to causing one of the upsets of the season. After 90 minutes
the score was even at 1-1 but with just under 4 minutes left in the
first overtime period, the Spartans grabbed the game winner.
The Mustangs started the game brightly and worked hard all over
the field to stop a potent York offense. The game burst into life
when the Mustangs grabbed the lead with a quick counter attack
involving seniors Katie Orlando (Baltimore, MD/Perry
Hall) and Rose Phelan (Carney, MD/Loch
Raven). Orlando against her old
team played a great through ball over the top of the defense,
and Phelan raced through to poke it by the
on-rushing goalkeeper. York outshot Villa Julie in the
first half but could not find a way past a strong defense and 8
saves from sophomore goalkeeper Casey Brown (Barnesville,
MD/Poolesville) made the score 1-0 at the half in
favor of the Mustangs.
The second half was more of the same,
with York pressing the Mustangs back in their own
half. They tied the game quickly by scoring only
three minutes after halftime. The Mustangs responded and
shutout the Spartans for the rest of the half, sending the game
into overtime. With only four minutes left in the first
overtime period, York grabbed the deciding goal, winning 2-1. The
Mustangs can be proud of their efforts against a team
that won the Capital Athletic Conference last season.
The Mustangs will not have time to rest as they face
non-conference opponent Ursinus College on Villafest weekend.
The game is scheduled for a 1pm kick-off at Owings Mills on
Saturday 20th October.
