Grantham, PA (April 30) – In MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament action, the #4 Stevenson softball battled against #1 Messiah in a Thursday afternoon match up, showing resilience at the plate despite falling by a 13-4 final in a run rule game.
Messiah came out with early momentum, plating runs in each of the first three innings to build a sizable lead. The Mustangs, however, refused to back down and answered with a strong fourth-inning surge.
After reaching base on an error,
Ava Stafursky sparked the rally, setting the stage for
Sierra Williams, who delivered a clutch RBI triple to right field to put Stevenson on the board.
Emily Hamp followed with an RBI single to bring the Mustangs within striking distance, while
Olivia Munoz and
Sahara Ward each added RBI singles to cap a four-run inning.
Stevenson tallied six hits in the contest, with Hamp leading the way with a two-hit performance, while Williams, Munoz, Ward, and
Mykaela Getz each contributed at the plate.
In the circle,
Madison Statuto provided a bright spot in relief, holding Messiah scoreless over the final 1.1 innings and recording a strikeout. Ky Vaugh (3-4) and
Anna Sexton also made appearances in the circle, each for an inning.
Despite the early deficit, the Mustangs showed fight and offensive production late, highlighted by their four-run inning and continued pressure on the base paths.
Stevenson will now turn its attention to its game 2 of the MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament, where the Mustangs are set to face No. 2 seed Eastern in a doubleheader on Friday, May 1 at 2:00 p.m.
