Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Stevenson University women's lacrosse team gave 11th-ranked Messiah University everything it could handle in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals before the second-seeded Falcons (15-2) defeated the Mustangs (7-11) 10-6 Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Messiah advances to play York in the MAC Commonwealth Championship.
Marisa Massimini, Kara Yarusso and Kellyann Coccia each had two goals, including Yarusso scoring her 100th career goal with 8:17 left to go in the second quarter.
For Stevenson, Sophie Shucosky had 11 saves and six ground balls, with Paige Wilson and Kayla Hunter having two caused turnovers.
Coccia had three draw controls with Yarusso adding two.
Messiah took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, before Yarusso's goal with 1:13 left in the first quarter got them on the board. Her 100th career goal with 8:17 left in the second cut the Mustang deficit to 5-2.
Messiah would score the next four goals to take a 9-2 lead with 7:27 left in the third quarter, before Massimini scored with 6:09 left in the third. That would be the first of four of the next five goals that Stevenson would score, as Coccia had back-to-back goals at 1:33 left in the third and 12:43 left in the fourth followed by Massimini's second goal at 10:19 left in the fourth to make the final deficit 10-6. Erin Olenchalk assisted on Coccia's first goal with Yarusso assisting on the second.
