Box Score YORK, Pa.- Stevenson women's lacrosse battled in a back-and-forth battle against the York College Spartans until York took control in the fourth quarter in the MAC Commonwealth Final, on a very rainy Saturday. York tallied six goals in the final quarter to secure the 12-7 win over the Mustangs.
Stevenson (12-6) returned to the MAC Commonwealth Championship game for the first time since the 2019 season. The Mustangs have made the MAC Commonwealth Tournament every year since joining the league in 2013, reaching the championship final six times and winning once in 2014.
Stevenson secured the opening draw control and just 45 seconds later Lan Le Crotty ripped a shot to the top left corner as McKenna Blick assisted on the goal.
After some back and forth play, at the 9:10 minute mark in the first quarter, Caroline Murphy made her way down the middle on an unassisted goal to take a 2-0 lead. For the next few minutes, York picked up the pace as they notched two goals to tie up the game. The Spartans added their first two goals just about a minute apart. Midway through the first quarter, Crotty added her second goal of the day as she snuck around the crease.
Five minutes into the second period the Mustangs and Spartans were locked at three goals apiece. Murphy came across the goal with a shot just outside followed by a shot from Isabelle VanEmburgh. Seconds later, Blick added her second assist on the day, as Murphy spun down the middle to take the lead. On a free position shot with over five minutes remaining in the half, Blick tallied her 53rd goal of the season to lead the Spartans, 5-3. Before the end of the half, York recorded two more goals to tie it up at five.
To open the third quarter, York struck first within the first three minutes of play. Big time saves from the Mustangs kept the score at 5-6 until Kaitlyn Kozlowski scored at the 6:30 minute mark. Minutes later, VanEmburgh scored her eight goal of the season on a free position with just one second left on the shot clock. The Spartans stormed past the Mustangs in the fourth quarter tallying six more goals to take a substantial 12-7 lead over Stevenson. Stevenson couldn't hang on as the York College Spartans claimed the MAC Commonwealth championship title.
News and Notes:
- Stevenson remained in stride through the first quarter with 12th-ranked York when the teams met in the regular season on April 27. However, the Spartans outscored the Mustangs 12-2 the rest of the way to claim a 16-6 victory.
- Blick continued her streak of scoring in every game this season for Stevenson and recorded her 150thgoal for her career between Winthrop and Stevenson.
- Sophie Shucosky recorded 11 saves in the net for the Mustangs.
