Resilient Mustangs Upended in Overtime on Saturday

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Stevenson men's soccer found its footing throughout the evening, eventually dictating pace and play towards the end of regulation, but could not solve the stout Coast Guard defense in a 1-0 overtime defeat on Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

Noah Engstrom closed out the back-and-forth clash with the game-winning tally off a pass from John Flood, lifting Coast Guard to a 2-0 mark on the season. Meanwhile, Stevenson falls to 0-2 in a second consecutive overtime defeat.

  • Offense and posession were tough to come by for the Mustangs in the early going as Coast Guard put a swarming defensive strategy on full display.
  • The Bears ripped shot attempts wide in the seventh and 13th minutes.
  • Coast Guard's Steve Ferrandino found just enough room to slot a ball along the ground, beating Kristian Slaby before the Stevenson defense rushed in to clear the ball away in the 27th minute, keeping the contest gridlocked at zero.
  • The Mustangs continued to utilize their depth, working several substitutions into the mix during the opening half.
  • Iliass Zouita registered the first shot of the night for the Mustangs nearly 37 minutes in.

  • The Mustangs found another gear, starting to sustain posession while posting several quality scoring looks. Edson DeMata had a shot punched aside by Coast Guard keeper Josh Hudson, before DeMata closed in again and churned a shot just beyound the left post.
  • Michael Daunt ripped an attempt wide for Coast Guard in the 65th minute, preceeding a Gabe Gallant rip in the 72nd minute.
  • The Mustangs regrouped again, upping the intensity in search of the icebreaker. A chaotic stretch saw shots from CJ Beteta, Adam White and Zouita all miss the target in less than five minutes heading into the 84th.

  • Engstrom finished the lone goal of the night in the 94th minute for the visiting Bears.

  • The Mustangs collected their second team save in as many games with another strong defensive play in the first half on Saturday.
  • Stevenson overcame a slow start offensively into the second half. After Coast Guard held a wide margin in shots, Stevenson trimmed the final shot tally to 8-7.
  • White provided a big offensive spark for the Mustangs near the conclusion of regulation, providing a strong prescence on the ball that amounted to a big offensive stretch.
  • Saturday marked the second consecutive overtime game to start the season for the Mustangs.
  • DeMata and Zouita registered two shots each for Stevenson.
  • Daunt led the visitors with two shots.
  • With Engstrom's tally in overtime, Coast Guard has five goals from five different players over the first two games of the season.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs cap a busy weekend on Sunday, Sepetember 5 against Penn State Brandywine, beginning at 4:00 PM from Mustang Stadium.
  • Coast Guard: The Bears close out their Maryland road swing with a Sunday afternoon clash with Goucher, starting at 2:00 PM.
