Late Touchdown Sinks Mustangs in Defensive Battle at RPI

Box Score

TROY, N.Y. - Host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) scored a late touchdown with 34 seconds remaining to down Stevenson 14-10 in non-conference football action Saturday afternoon at ECAV Stadium.

  • RPI (2-0) drove down to the Mustang 1 on its first drive, however, Josh Siegenthaler forced a fumble and the Mustangs (0-2) recovered at the 20.
  • On its second drive, Stevenson got to the RPI 12, but a holding penalty and back-to-back sacks stalled the drive at the Engineer 38.

  • Taking over at the Mustang 29 following an interception, RPI used eight plays capped by a four-yard run to take a 7-0 lead 6:02 before halftime.
  • The Mustangs countered with a 15-play, 59-yard march that resulted in a 26-yard field goal by Brody Campbell to get on the board 17 seconds before halftime.
  • The hosts went into the locker room with a 7-3 advantage.

  • Stevenson put together an eight-play drive that got it to the Engineer 27, but the Mustangs could not convert a 4th-and-2 with just under four minutes left in the quarter.
  • The Mustang defense held RPI to just 24 total yards in the third.

  • With 11:33 left and RPI deep in its own territory on 4th-and-16, Stevenson got pressure on the Engineer punter and Charles Greer brought him down at the RPI 19.
  • After a 14-yard completion from Ryan Sedgwick to Tylor Blake, three Kevin Joppy runs capped by a one-yard scamper put the Mustangs in front 10-7 with 9:48 left.
  • RPI went three-and-out on its next drive, and Stevenson made it to midfield on its next drive before stalling with 4:52 left.
  • The hosts took over with 3:33 to go and a nine-play, 57-yard drive capped by a four-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds left put RPI in front 14-10.
  • Stevenson went from its 12 to its 40 on the final drive of the game but a hail mary from Sedgwick was intercepted at the RPI 15.

  • Stevenson limited RPI to 174 yards of total offense as it outgained the Engineers 261-174.
  • The Mustangs held an opponent under 200 yards of offense for the first time since allowing 190 at FDU-Florham on September 28, 2019.
  • Mario McIntyre finished with three sacks for 17 yards as part of seven total tackles.  His three sacks are an individual single-game program record.
  • Stevenson sacked RPI signal caller George Marinopoulos seven times, with Tashan Fitzgerald finishing with two sacks and Siegenthaler and Tom Zatalava one apiece.
  • The seven sacks ties a program record set against Lycoming in 2015.
  • Siegenthaler finished with six tackles, while Isaiah Snead and Ethan Joseph had five apiece.
  • Snead and Joseph each had pass breakups.
  • Joppy carried 32 times for 125 yards and a touchdown.
