FINKSBURG, Md. - The Stevenson men's tennis team won its second-straight MAC Commonwealth title with a 5-3 victory over Messiah in the conference finals, earning them an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. Senior Ray McDermott become the second Mustang in program history to be named the MAC Commonwealth Championship Most Valuable Player (Sturniolo, 2019).
McDermott and junior Larry Johnson III won their No. 1 doubles match in a thrilling tiebreak, 8-7 (7-2). The win was McDermott and Johnson's fifth straight.
Senior James Waychoff and junior Lukas Sanidas won their seventh match of the year in No. 3 by an 8-3 score.
Heading into singles play, the Mustangs carried a 2-1 lead.
Sanidas won his No. 5 match handily by a 6-1, 6-0 margin, giving the Mustangs a 3-1 advantage.
Johnson took the first set of his No. 3 match, 6-3. After trailing 5-2 in the second, Johnson came all the way back to clinch the victory in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5). Johnnson's win gave the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.
McDermott clinched the win for the Mustangs after overcoming a 5-0 deficit in the final set, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
The match was moved from Stevenson Courts to the indoor Carroll Tennis Center due to lightning.
The Mustangs will discover their first round opponent in the NCAA Division III Tennis Championship on Monday, May 10.
