Women's Tennis Overcomes Deficit to Win Season Opener Over Catholic

STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson women's tennis team overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to defeat Catholic by a 5-4 score in its season opener, held at the Greenspring Courts.

Seniors Jenna Skove and Kelsi Mentzer dropped their season-opening doubles match in No. 1 by an 8-5 score, while senior Nina Bretz and junior Taelor Brown fell in their No. 2 match by an 8-6 margin. 

Juniors Megan Waskiewicz and Esha Kashmiri picked up the lone doubles win for the Mustangs, 8-3.

After winning the first set of her No. 1 singles match by an 6-4 score, Skove shutdown her opponent in the second set by a 6-0 mark to seal the victory.

Waskiewicz took the first set of her No. 2 match by a score of 6-4, before falling in the second by a 6-2 margin. Waskiewicz would eventually pick up the win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (10-2). 

Brown cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph in No. 5. Kashmiri overcame a one-set deficit to take her match by a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 score. 

This is the Mustangs' lone team match scheduled for the fall season. Stevenson competes at the ITA Regional tournament, hosted by the University of Mary Washington, starting on Friday, September 20.
