Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - With 1:22 remaining in regulation, Stevenson men's soccer junior Jay Smith found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 before scoring 3:28 into overtime to lift the Mustangs over visiting Neumann in the season opener for both teams Friday evening at Mustang Stadium.
- The Mustangs (1-0) recorded the first shot on net as junior Matthew Glady forced Seth Walker to come up with his first of four opening half saves.
- Sophomore Matt Stellitano answered with a pair of saves down the other end, including a near post diving save.
- Both team's recorded a shot on net in the final five minutes of the half, including a left-footed shot by sophomore Diego Guerrero from the top of the 18-yard box.
- In the opening five minutes of the half, the Knights (0-1) went down a player after Gavin Ford received his second yellow card.
- Just 34 seconds later, Neumann was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box, but Stellitano guessed the correct way for the save.
- On the ensuing corner kick, Tenzin Choedak made a near post run and headed in the game's first goal.
- Walker made six consecutive saves before Smith was able to get one by him off a long throw-in from junior Dylan Holy to the far post. The ball bounced in the middle of the six-yard box before falling to the feet of Smith.
- Junior CJ Beteta nearly ended things in the opening minute as he ripped a shot from 25 yards out to the top right corner, but Walker made a diving save to punch it away.
- After a free kick by Walker was possessed by the Mustangs in the midfield, junior Pete Wickiser played a through ball to Smith who beat Walker to the far left post.
- Stevenson outshot Neumann, 24-10, including 15-6 in the second and overtime periods combined.
- The Mustangs held possession for 55 percent of the game, of which 60 percent was in their offensive half.
- It is the fourth game-winning goal for Smith in his career after netted three as a sophomore.
- Smith finished with a game-high five shots, all on net.
- Walker finished with 13 saves, including eight in the second half, while Stellitano totaled six.
