Men's Tennis Cruises to First NCAA Tournament Win, Sweeps Clarks Summit

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Stevenson men's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 first-round win over Clarks Summit for the program's first NCAA tournament victory.

The Mustangs (17-2) opened up their first NCAA appearance by taking each of the three doubles matches.

Juniors Drew Ryan and Ray McDermott dominated their No. 1 doubles opponents by an 8-1 score, improving their season record to 12-4. 

Senior Douglas Vaughan and junior Andre Sturniolo bested their No. 2 opponents by an 8-2 margin, giving them their fourth-straight win and 18th overall. 

Senior Wornden Ly and sophomore Richie Abruscato remain undefeated (13-0) after shutting out their opposition in No. 3, 8-0. 

In singles play, both Ly and freshman Larry Johnson III made quick work of their opponents to clinch the match. Ly won his No. 5 match by a 6-0, 6-0 mark for his 10th win of the year, while Johnson won by the same score in No. 6. Johnson has won five-straight matches and 15 overall. The other four matches were halted when Stevenson clinched the win.

The Mustangs will get back to work on Friday, May 10 when they take on No. 32 MIT in the second round. First serve is set for 8:30 a.m.
