Mustangs Earn Top Seed in Playoffs After 14-3 Win Over Messiah

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse junior Carly Bowes set the single season goals record while the Mustangs held Messiah scoreless in the second half as Stevenson finished unbeaten in MAC Commonwealth play and earned the top seed in the upcoming playoffs with a 14-3 victory over Messiah Wenesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

  • On the first free-position shot of the game, senior Dana Stevens dished the ball across to freshman Caroline Murphy who buried it near side.
  • After junior Mack Ferguson picked off a pass, the Mustangs (14-3, 8-0 MAC Commonwelth) doubled their lead in transition as freshman Hannah Huff found Stevens.
  • Messiah (5-11, 5-2 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board at the 18:46 mark with its first shot of the game, a free-position shot by Jessie Wynne. Just 14 seconds later, Murphy and Stevens connected once again.
  • For the third time in the opening 15 minutes of the game, Stevens found Murphy as the duo extended the hosts lead to, 4-1.
  • At the nine minute mark, Bowes netted her 56th goal of the season on a free-position attempt from the top of the arc.
  • Bowes scored two of the next three goals as Stevens netted her second goal of the game to push the Mustangs lead to, 9-3.

  • Murphy continued her scoring streak with a free-position goal just 4:46 into the second half.
  • Stevens and sophomore Lindsay Seipp scored 23 second apart to five the hosts a nine-goal advantage before Bowes pushed it to 10 with her fourth goal of the game at the midway point.
  • Seipp found the back of the net for the second time as Stevens dished out her fourth assist of the game.

  • Stevenson outshot Messiah, 41-13, including 28-9 in the opening half.
  • The Falcons last goal came with 10:53 remaining in the first half as the Mustnags held Messiah scoreless over the final 40:53.
  • The win stops a eight-game winning streak by Messiah in the series. It is also the first time the Mustangs have scored at least 10 goals in the last eight games.
  • It is the second time the Mustangs, who extend their winning streak to 11, have finished unbeaten in conference play. Stevenson finished perfect in its first season in the MAC Commonwealth in 2013.
  • The Mutangs 14 wins are the second most in program history behind the 2013 team's 16.
  • Bowes broke the single season goals record of 56 set by Olivia Monteiro '17 in 2017. She also entered the top 10 in career goals.
  • Stevens finished with three goals and four assists and extended her points streak to 14 while Huff extended her points streak to 11.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, May 1 when the Mustangs host a MAC Commonwealth semifinal contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Mustangs will host the winner of the first round contest.
