Strong Second Half Leads Mustangs Over 23rd-Ranked Washington (Md.)

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by 12 saves by junior Mack Ferguson and six goals by classmate Carly Bowes, the Stevenson women's lacrosse team held 23rd-ranked Washington (Md.) to just four second half goals en route to a 16-14 non-conference victory Thursday evening at Mustang Stadium.

  • The hosts struck first as freshman Caroline Murphy netted a free-position goal just 1:34 into the contest.
  • After winning the ensuing draw control, the Shorewomen (9-3) tied the game on a goal by Lauren Brenner before Brenner gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
  • Bowes netted her first goal of the game after a caused turnover and groundball pickup by Ferguson.
  • Back-to-back goals by sophomore Lindsay Seipp and Bowes gave the Mustangs (10-3) and one-goal advantage but Washington (Md.) responded with two straight goals to reclaim the lead.
  • Bowes netted a hat trick at the midway point of the opening half to tie the game at 5-5.
  • The Shorewomen scored three consecutive goals to take an 8-5 lead with 9:52 remaining before Stevenson answered with a 3-0 run over a 3:40 span.
  • Washington (Md.) took a two-goal advantage with 2:58 left before Murphy netted her third goal of the game to get the hosts within one at the break.

  • Over the final 14:16, Stevenson outscored Washington (Md.), 4-1, including an insurance goal by Kozlowski to put the hosts up by two with 3:43 remaining.
  • Ferguson stopped the final three shots she faced, including a save on a free-position shot with 59 seconds remaining before the Mustangs ran out the clock.

  • Washington (Md.) outshot Stevenson, 34-29, including, 21-16, in the first half.
  • The Mustangs, who extend their winning streak to seven, finished 2-for-8 on free-position shots while the Shorewomen were 1-for-5.
  • It is the sixth 10-win season in the last seven season and 10th in the last 12.
  • The win is just the third win over a ranked opponent since the start of the 2014 season with Stevenson going 3-26 over that stretch.
  • Bowes finished with seven points, picking up her first assist of the season. The junior, who recorded her seventh game with at least three goals, is three goals shy of 100 for her career.
  • It is the sixth 10-plus save performance for Ferguson this season after totaling seven in the second half.
  • Kozlowksi recorded a game-high seven draw controls to go with her two goals.
  • Senior Gabby DiGello finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, April 13 when the Mustangs host a MAC Commonwealth contest versus Widener. Opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
