Lee Nets Two in Mustangs ECAC Quarterfinal Victory Over Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. - Highlighted by two first half goals by junior Tariq Lee and the eighth solo shutout by sophomore Matt Stellitano, the Stevenson men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over Wilkes in the ECAC Division III Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at Bruggeworth Field.

  • After the host Colonels (9-8-3) earned the first corner kick of the game, the Mustangs responded with their first corner kick a minute later after a shot by sophomore Dale Boring was blocked.
  • The serve in by Boring eventually found junior Dylan Holy but his shot was also blocked before sophomore Diego Guerrero sent a shot wide left.
  • Stellitano stopped his first test as Wilkes recorded the first shot on net in the eighth minute, its first shot of the game.
  • Stevenson (14-6-34) took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as Guerrero chipped a through ball to Lee who touched it past Zach Tone for the goal.
  • Just 2:11 later, Lee scored an unassisted goal to double the Mustangs lead after carrying the ball into the box and beating Tone to the far left post.
  • Sophomore Sean McDonald put a pair of shots on goal in the 23rd and 30th minutes.
  • Junior Drew Meyers recorded a shot in the final 32 seconds of the opening half but sent it high.

  • Wilkes started the half with back-to-back shots in the opening 3:25, including a shot on net that was saved by Stellitano.
  • In the 56th minute, senior DR Medtart had his shot blocked before the rebound attempt by Boring went wide left.
  • A few minutes later, Lee was looking for the hat trick but his header on net was stopped by Russell Rauh, who started the second half.
  • For the second consecutive game, the Mustangs defense recorded a save, stopping a shot in the 60th minute.
  • Lee recorded his fourth shot on goal in the 76th minute.
  • The Colonels had a pair of shots in the 89th minute but the first one was blocked before the second went wide.

  • Stevenson outshot Wilkes, 24-12, including 13-4 in the opening half.
  • The Mustangs also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Stellitano finished with three saves for his eighth solo shutout of the season.
  • It is the third multi-goal for Lee and second of the season. His first came last season in the first round of the ECAC Tournament.
  • Medtart madehis 80th career appearance, which ranks second in program history and just one shy of tying the record. He already holds the school record with 78 starts.

  • Top-seeded Stevenson will host Kean in the ECAC Division III semifinals on Saturday, November 23 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
