OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's lacrosse team scored twice in the final 3:32 with goals from sophomores Kiely Bunce and Sarah Roerty as the Mustangs posted a 14-12 non-conference victory over Buffalo State Sunday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (2-6) never trailed in the game as the team's were tied five times. Stevenson had a total of seven different goal scorers, including at least two goals each by Bunce, Roerty, sophomore Carly Bowes and senior Jamie Bittner.
Sparked by back-to-back free-position goals by Bowes, the hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 2:01 into the contest. A pair of goals by Christina Krowel knotted the game at 2-2 before the Mustangs went on a 5-2 run to end the opening half. Stevenson scored three times in the final five minutes of the opening half, including a pair of goals by Bittner for her first career multi-goal game.
An unassisted goal by Bowes a minute into the second half pushed the Mustangs lead to 8-4 before the Bengals (4-2) answered with four straight, including two free-position goals. Back-to-back free-position goals by freshman Lauren Tarnowski and senior MaryKate White pushed Stevenson's lead back to two before Buffalo State scored four of the next six goals to tie the game at 12-12 with 4:30 remaining.
Bunce netted her third goal of the game, the game-winning goal, on an assist from sophomore Mallory Davila with 3:32 left in regulation before Roerty added an insurance goal, her second goal of the game, with 2:17 remaining.
Bowes finished with a game-high four goals while Bittner totaled nine draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Both Bunce and Roerty totaled four ground balls while sophomore Mack Ferguson finished with nine saves in net.
The Mustangs outshot Buffalo State, 35-27 while going 6-for-8 on free-position shots.
Stevenson returns to action on Thursday, March 29 when the Mustangs travel to Alvernia to open MAC Commonwealth play. Opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
