Strong Shooting Moves Hood Past Men's Basketball

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Visiting Hood College shot 50% from the floor as it posted a 76-56 MAC Commonwealth men's basketball victory over Stevenson University at Owings Mills Gymnasium Wednesday night.

The Blazers (8-14, 4-9 MAC Commonwealth) got a game-high 23 points from Michael Riley, while Evan Wang finished with 11 points and six assists.

Stevenson (10-13, 2-12 MAC Commonwealth) was led by 14 points and five rebounds from sophomore Mark Terrell.  Senior Danzel Wright added 12 points, while freshman Kobe Colston finished with nine points and junior Marcus Dentley eight.

The first half saw six lead changes, but the hosts were never able to eke out more than a one-point lead.  Stevenson trailed 21-15 at the 10:27 mark when a 9-2 Mustang run capped by a Colston basket put it on top 24-23.  The two teams traded the lead twice in the next minute, but Hood held the Mustangs without a field goal for the final seven minutes of the first half and opened up a 40-27 lead at halftime.

Hood extended its run to 23-1 as its lead swelled to 21, 48-27, with 18:13 left in the game.  A 10-2 Mustang spurt pulled the home team within 12, 52-40, at the 11:40 mark on a pair of Colston free throws, and the lead got down to 10 with 6:54 to go, but the Blazers responded with a 13-3 run over the next three-plus minutes to put the game out of reach.

Hood shot 57% in the opening half and 50% for the game while limiting the Mustangs to 35.8% shooting.  Stevenson was 14-18 from the free throw line, but just 4-23 behind the arc, while the Blazers made nine of their 23 three-point attempts and were 13-21 at the charity stripe.  Hood held a 35-33 rebound advantage.

Stevenson is back in action Saturday afternoon when it entertains No. 16 Lycoming in a 3:00 MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
