Mustangs Season Ends in ECAC 2nd Round to Wesley

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - After a scoreless first 45-minutes, the Stevenson men's soccer team and the visiting Wesley College Wolverines had little trouble finding the back of the net in the second half as the sides combined for five goals.  The Mustangs got markers from freshmen James Rosa and Jason Kahan but it would not be enough as Wesley buried three to defeat Stevenson by a final of 3-2 in the 2nd Round of the ECAC Divison III Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

  • Stevenson (12-9-1) recorded the opening shot of the contest just three minutes in when Tariq Lee got free at the top of the 18-yard box and sent an attempt at Wesley keeper Kyle Springsteen who calmly collected it.
  • Then in the eighth-minute junior DR Medtart slipped a ball in behind the Wolverines defense to freshman James Rosa who was left one-on-one against Springsteen but his shot was denied right up against the left post keeping it 0-0.
  • The Mustangs continued the pressure on the visiting side as off a corner played in by Medtart in minute 13 junior Gaige Robinson had an offering sail wide of goal.
  • Wesley (16-4-1) posted their first shot of the match with 14:06 off the clock as a corner sent in by Nicholas Hood found the head of Bruce Yeager who knocked it wide of freshman goalie Matt Stellitano.
  • Stevenson went back on the attack in the 15th-minute as Lee and Medtart had their attempts blocked and Robinson push one wide.
  • In the 25th-minute each side would engineer a chance just 22-seconds apart as Rosa forced Springsteen into another save with a shot from just inside the box and then at the other end of the pitch Deekai Gbonimy ripped one wide of Stellitano's cage.
  • Freshman forward Nick Balcer looked to get the home side on the board first with 29:41 elapsed but Springsteen was up to the challenge as he made his fourth save of the match.
  • The rest of the frame would see Gbonimy and freshman Sean McDonald each record a shot, however, they both went wide of their respective targets.
  • The half came to a close with the Mustangs holding a sizeable 9-3 edge in shots.

  • Stevenson had a great chance just four minutes in as Medtart fired a shot a Springsteen who pushed it up into the air.  The found the head of Lee who had the keeper beat but knocked it off the crossbar.
  • Unfortunately for the home side the Wolverines came right back down the field and at the 48:24 mark Gbonimy who had made a strong run down the left side ripped a shot past a diving Stellitano for a 1-0 lead.
  • Then, just 1:41 later the visitors made it 2-0 as Jordan Angel laid a pass off to Danny Garza just inside the box who rocketed a shot into the top left corner with 39 minutes to play.
  • The Mustangs finally cracked the scoresheet in the 57th-minute after the initial shot off the boot of freshman Jason Kahan was stopped by Springsteen the ensuing rebound was put home by Rosa for his fourth of the campaign trimming the margin to 2-1 at the 56:20 mark.
  • Wesley extended their advantage back to two with 62:22 gone as a cross into the box deflected off a Stevenson defender and bounced into the net for a 3-1 lead.
  • The Mustangs would not go down without a fight as in minute 68 freshman Jason Kahan took a pass from Lee and netted his third marker of the season bringing it back to a one-goal margin 3-2.
  • With 14 minutes remaining the home side tested Springsteen once again as Medtart floated a ball into the box, however, header by sophomore Dylan Holy went right into the arms of the Wolverines goalie to maintain the slim lead.
  • Stevenson had a couple of chances in the final minute with a pair of Medtart corners but they only resulted in one shot from the foot of sophomore Tim Mozingo which was blocked by the Wesley defense ending the game.

  • The Mustangs outshot Wesley 21-8 for the match, including 12-5 in the second half.
  • Stevenson held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • With the loss, the Mustangs record in the ECAC Tournament goes to 4-2-1.
