Monteiro Scores a Career-High Six Goals in Win Over Washington (Md.)

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse senior Olivia Monteiro scored a career-high six goals and finished with seven points as the Mustangs posted a 17-10 non-conference victory over Washington (Md.) Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

With the win, the Mustangs (2-3) snapped an eight-game losing streak versus Washington (Md.) that dated back to 1999. It was just the second meeting for the two teams since 2006 with the other coming a season ago.

Katherine Vincent scored back-to-back free-position goals in a 2:16 span to give the host Shorewomen (2-1) an early 2-0 lead. But Stevenson responded with seven consecutive goals, including a trio by Monteiro to claim a five-goal lead.

A free-position goal by freshman Kiely Bunce sparked the run before Monteiro tied the game at 2-2 after receiving a pass behind the cage and beating her defender one-on-one. Senior Mackenzie Reese gave the hosts its first lead of the game after powering her way to the goal.

Senior Brady Heher scored her 12th goal of the season with 12:42 remaining to cap the run as Washington (Md.) scored twice to get back within three following the third goal of the game by Vincent.

The teams traded a pair of goals as the hosts went into the half with a 9-6 lead.

A 3-1 run by the Shorewomen got the visitors back within two just seven minutes into the second half but the Mustangs defense held Washington (Md.) to just one goal over the final 23 minutes and scoreless over the last 15:08.

After the goal by the visitors got the Shorewomen back within two, Stevenson responded with five straight goals to conclude the game, including three consecutive free-position goals.

In addition to her seven points, Monteiro finished with five draw controls and two ground balls. Reese finished with three goals while freshman Kiely Bunce had three points on two goals and an assist.

Defensively, freshman Carly Bowes recorded two caused turnovers and two ground balls while sophomore Gabby DiGello had a game-high three ground balls. In net, freshman Mack Ferguson totaled eight saves.

The Mustangs held a slight 30-28 edge in shots and a 16-14 advantage in ground balls while finishing 6-for-11 on free-position shots. The Shorewomen held a 15-14 edge in draw controls and were 5-for-8 on free-position attempts.

Stevenson returns to action on Sunday, March 12 when the Mustangs face Vassar in a non-conference contest in Fort Myers, Florida. Opening draw is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
