Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Montclair State scored seven straight goals to erase a three-goal deficit as the Red Hawks posted an 11-7 non-conference victory over the Stevenson women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (1-3) have dropped back-to-back home games to start the season and are 3-10 in non-conference regular season games since the start of the 2016 season. The team is also 5-7 at home during that span.
Despite losing the opening draw control, the hosts struck first just 1:13 into the game as junior Brady Heher dodged her defender for her team leading 10th goal of the season. Heher has scored in all four games this season.
After an initial save by freshman Mack Ferguson, Francesca Verrone was able to scoop in the rebound in front of the cage to tie the game early.
Heher scored her second of the day to put Stevenson back up by one after picking up a loose ball inside of the arc and rolling in front of the crease before beating the goalkeeper. But the Red Hawks (2-1) answered with back-to-back scores to take a 3-2 lead.
The hosts responded with a pair of goals, including a score by senior Olivia Monteiro with eight seconds left before halftime to take a 4-3 lead. Along with Heher, Monteiro has scored in all four games to open the season.
Freshman Mallory Davila scored her second goal of the season just 39 seconds into the second half to give the Mustangs a two-goal lead but Montclair State scored seven straight, with six of them unassisted, to give the visitors a 10-5 lead.
Monteiro stopped the run with her second goal of the day at the 7:38 mark but the Red Hawks responded 22 seconds later to reclaim a five-goal lead. Monteiro ended the day with a hat trick.
Junior Jamie Bittner finished with two caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls.
The Mustangs finished with a slight 24-23 edge in shots and 13-7 in draw controls while Montclair State held a 13-10 advantage in ground balls.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, March 8 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Washington (Md.) beginning at 7:00 p.m.
