Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's basketball dominated Senior Night in a 72-34 victory over MAC Commonwealth opponent, Alvernia, on Tuesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The win was the third straight for the Mustangs.
Senior Sara Tarbert recorded her 24th double-double of the season and 25th straight dating back to last season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She is now in sole possession of the second-longest double-double streak in NCAA Division III history. The Division III record for consecutive double-doubles is 26 set by Christine Daniels of Norwich from November 15, 2010 to February 22, 2011.
With the win, Stevenson (16-8, 11-4 MAC Commonwealth) clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's MAC Commonwealth Championship. The Mustangs will be on the road next Wednesday (Feb. 22) at either Albright or Messiah.
Stevenson allowed its fewest points and posted its largest margin of victory since defeating NYU Poly by a similar 72-34 score on November 30, 2013.
Senior Niavanni Grant and Tarbert connected with each other on the first two buckets of the game to take a 5-0 lead over the Crusaders just over three minutes into play. Stevenson forced six turnovers and held the Crusaders scoreless for over four minutes before the guests scored on a fast break, but senior Kameron Ward matched it with a put back layup on the next play. Stevenson forced five more turnovers as it extended its lead to 13-2 at the end of the period.
The Mustangs picked up where they left off as Grant hit another layup just 21 seconds into the second quarter, before junior Kristine Tennyson sank a three pointer to stretch their lead. The Crusaders (2-22, 2-13 MAC Commonwealth) hit a jumper with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, but Stevenson outscored Alvernia 11-5, as it maintained control and held onto a 29-9 lead at the break.
In the first half, Stevenson shot 36.1 percent from the floor while holding Alvernia to just 16 percent. The Mustangs led 17-11 in forced turnovers, 26-18 on the boards, and 9-3 in assists.
The Mustangs stayed aggressive in the second half as they forced three turnovers and scored eight unanswered points, six coming from the senior trio, in less than four minutes of play. Alvernia hit double digits on a layup from Maya Cooper, but Stevenson closed the quarter on a 20-0 run that included scoring from six different Mustangs. The hosts held a 57-11 lead at the end of the third.
Stevenson maintained control through the fourth quarter as it picked up its third straight win. The quarter was highlighted by four points from freshman Bianca Elize Santos and classmate Savana Herndon.
Stevenson finished 46.9 percent from the floor compared to 26.8 percent for Alvernia. The Mustangs led 26-17 in forced turnovers, 44-33 in rebounds, and 20-5 in assists.
Junior Kaitlyn VanTash and Santos each finished with eight points, while VanTash grabbed a career high 10 rebounds. Tennyson, Grant, and sophomore Jonyae Curry each totaled six points, while Curry added four assists.
In pregame ceremonies, the team honored five seniors that are in their last season with the Mustangs: Grant, Tarbert, Ward, and managers Cortez Black and Marlow Henderson.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 18th when it travels to Lycoming for its regular season finale beginning at 1:00 p.m.
