Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – Junior Jonyae Curry totaled a career-best 20 points as the Stevenson University women's basketball team defeated Arcadia University 63-55 at Alumni Gymnasium in MAC Commonwealth action Saturday afternoon.
Stevenson (7-3, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) won its fourth straight game and for the sixth time in seven tries. The Mustangs' record through 10 games is their best since starting 8-2 in 2014-15.
The Mustangs led 43-37 entering the fourth quarter before Arcadia (3-5, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) scored the first five points to pull within one on a Taylor Dunn layup with 7:26 to go. The Knights took a 46-45 lead with 6:09 remaining on a pair of Kylie Fischer free throws.
Arcadia's lead was short-lived, as Curry made a layup on the other end with 5:55 left to spark a 6-0 spurt that saw freshman Denia Campbell put the visitors on top 51-46 with 4:12 to go. On the other end, a Dunn three cut the lead to two on Arcadia's next possession, but freshman Morgan Jacobs responded with a basket to put Stevenson back up by four at the 3:35 mark.
Another Dunn basket with just over three minutes left again made it a two-point game, 53-51, before the Mustangs scored the next five points to go up 58-51 with just over a minute left on an Imani Sanders free throw. Stevenson went 3-4 at the free throw line in the final minute in addition to a Curry layup that sealed things.
Stevenson led by nine twice in the third quarter and opened up a 42-32 lead on a Campbell three with 2:42 left in the period. A late 5-1 Arcadia spurt pulled the Knights within six, 43-37, entering the final frame.
The Mustangs scored the game's first 10 points, with a pair of free throws by sophomore Hannah Crist putting Stevenson up 10-0 just over three minutes into the game. The guests held Arcadia without a field goal for the first 3:30, but the Knights came back and took a 13-12 lead on a pair of Sydney Cyr free throws at the 1:21 mark. Stevenson responded to take a 16-13 lead after one quarter.
Stevenson extended its run to 9-0 to build a 21-13 lead at the 7:14 mark on a Campbell basket. Arcadia got the lead down to one, but the Mustangs did not trail in the second and took a 28-23 lead into the locker room.
Curry finished 6-14 from the floor and 7-8 at the free throw line en route to her career-high 20 points, while Jacobs finished with 14 points off the bench. Crist, Sanders and Campbell all finished with seven points apiece.
Arcadia was led by 26 points and 16 rebounds by Dunn.
The Knights held a 49-32 rebounding advantage on the afternoon, but committed 28 turnovers compared to Stevenson's 15 and shot just 31.5%, while the Mustangs shot 36% from the floor. Arcadia was 18-21 at the free throw line, while Stevenson finished 14-20.
After breaking for finals, Stevenson returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Goucher for a 1:00 contest.
