OWINGS MILLS, Md. –  Senior Carrie Brighthaupt scored her first goal as a Mustang in her final game, as the Stevenson field hockey team closed out the 2017 season with a, 3-0 win on the road over the Hood College Blazers on Thursday afternoon in Frederick.  Sophomore goalies Hope Nyarady, Kelsey Eure and junior backstop Maia Harper combined to pitch the shutout.  Junior Sara McVey and sophomore Emma Adams each chipped in with a goal as well. 

With the win, Stevenson (7-9, 3-4 MAC Commonwealth) runs their winning streak over Hood (2-15, 0-7 MAC Commonwealth) to 15 games and extends their lead in the overall series to 16-3. 

The Mustangs came out fired up with just a minute into the contest freshman Noel Martin worked her way into the attack circle and was able to force a save out of Blazers keeper Hailey Poisal.  The visitors kept up the pressure as they totaled five shots and seven penalty corners in the opening 15-minutes.

Stevenson finally made it onto the scoreboard in the 16th minute, when McVey dribbled the ball inside the arc meeting little resistance and blasted a shot past Poisal making it 1-0.

Junior Alexis Young looked to add extend the lead just 44-seconds later when off a home giveaway she carried the ball into the attack zone, but her offering was sent away by Poisal.

Looking to take advantage of the possession edge that the road team held throughout the first half Brighthaupt, playing in her final game for the Green and White was awarded a penalty corner that she inserted to McVey, who had her shot take off a little high, but fortunately for the Mustangs Brighthaupt was there to deflect it out of the reach of Poisal to take a 2-0 lead into the break.   

Opening the second half the guests were on the attack once again as a shot from sophomore Jordan Hershberger went high of the cage with just 1:42 elapsed in the second period. 

With a little over 12-minutes to play the guests would add one more to the scoreline when Adams gained the offensive zone and beat Poisal to extend the edge to 3-0.

The away side continued to keep Poisal under duress for the rest of the game forcing her to make 15 saves on the day. 

The Mustangs defense was outstanding on the afternoon not allowing the Blazers a shot outshooting them 29-0 on the day and held an impressive 28-1 edge in penalty corners.

With the win, Stevenson improved on last year's 5-11 mark by two games and with a young squad, the future looks bright for coach Laurel Martin.  The 2018 season will kick-off in September.
