Box Score READING, Pa. - The Stevenson women's basketball team struggled to convert in the second half against Albright's hot shooting as they fell, 75-58, on Saturday at Bollman Center. The loss snapped the Mustangs' seven-game win streak.
Stevenson (13-7, 8-3 MAC Commonwealth) scored on its first four possessions and jumped out to an 8-5 lead over Albright (16-4, 11-0 MAC Commonwealth) just over three minutes into play. The Lions stayed agressive as they capitalized on Mustang fouls, hitting five straight free throws to edge the guests and stretch its lead.
Trailing 17-11 with almost two and a half minutes to play in the opening quarter, the Mustangs held the hosts scoreless from the floor for 5:15 of game time as they chipped away at their deficit. A jumper from junior Imani Sanders to open the second quarter paired with a free throw from senior Sara Tarbert made it a two point game, but the Lions were able to hit back to back jumpers to maintain control.
The teams fought back and forth as the guests struggled to cut Albright's lead, until eight points from Tarbert, her last being a layup with seven seconds on the clock, locked the game 31-31 at the half.
In the first half, Stevenson shot 45.8 percent from the floor, while holding the Lions to 32.3 percent. Albright edged the Mustangs 20-19 in rebounds and 7-4 in forced turnovers.
The Lions started the second half with a hot hand as they totaled five steals and hit seven of their first eight shot attempts to regain and stretch their lead to 48-36 just under four minutes into play. A layup from Tarbert stopped the Mustangs' scoring drought and sparked four more points for Stevenson, including a layup from senior Niavanni Grant with just over three and a half minutes to play in the third. Trailing 48-42, Stevenson was held without a bucket the rest of the way as the Lions closed the period on a 7-0 run.
Stevenson continued to struggle in the final quarter as the team totaled just seven points, all from sophomore Jonyae Curry, in over five and a half minutes of play. During the stretch Albright went 5-8 from the floor and made it a 65-49 game. The Lions hit their next five shots as they extended their lead to the buzzer.
Albright finished shooting 50.9 percent from the floor compared to 41.5 percent for Stevenson. The Lions held a 35-29 advantage on the boards, and a 17-14 advantage in forced turnovers.
Tarbert recorded her 20th double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. She is now just 17 points shy of 2,000 for her collegiate career. Curry finished with 13 points, while junior Kaitlyn VanTash and freshman Hannah Crist each added seven.
The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday, February 1st when they host No. 22 Messiah beginning at 6 p.m.
